أفكر في ما سيفعله صباغ الأحذية ، حين يستيقظ ويجد عدته قد سرقها الإبن ، عند انتصاف الليل ، قبل أن يأوي إلى مخدعه ، عالقاً بذاكرته احتضانه العدة ، خوفاً من الضياع ، رغم علمه أنها لا تفارقه ، فلقد حفر إسمه على صندوق الخشب ، حالما تصدعت أركانه ، قبل أعوام ، ولم تعد تستهويه عملية الرتق التي مارسها مراراً مع تلك العدة .
ربما حين يفيق ويفرك عينيه من النعاس الذابل ، سيرى حتماً ثمة سيارة أمس مسرعة ، كانت تقفز فوق الركن ، الذي يتخذه مقعداً له ، عند حافة تقاطع شارع الفرزدق مع جرير ، ذاك المكان شبه الدائري الذي أثرى الكتب في تبادل الشتائم والقذف ضد الآخر ، كما تروي الحكايات .
قد يرى ، بعدما يغسل عينيه من ليلة سهر مضنية ، أنه تمنى السيارة المسرعة لا تصل موضعه وأنه قد نط ، قبل وصولها ، السياج القريب ، الذي كان يقود المعري عبره على الجادة الأخرى من الشارع ، حتى أنه ظل يتردد في مسامعه طوال الليل أن الرجل الضرير سيأخذه في رحلة خارج هذه المدينة .
