عندما فكرت الباحثتان في إجراء هذه الدراسة كانت دوافعهما نابعة من أمرين: من ناحية تزايد الجدل في الأوساط الإعلامية والثقافية وحتى الشعبية حول موقع النساء ودورهن في الإعلام، ولا سيما المرئي منه، وبروز أحكام مسبقة وتعميمات في هذا المجال سلبية كانت أم ايجابية، ترافقت مع ظاهرة تعدد وتنوع محطات التلفزة العربية الأرضية والفضائية. ومن ناحية ثانية، تزايد الاهتمام بدراسة التمايز النوعي في العمل بين النساء والرجال "الجندر" وهي التسمية التي سوف تعتمد عليها الباحثتان في هذه الدراسة إلى جانب "التمايز النوعي لأسباب عديدة منها: إن هذه التسمية غدت معتمدة لدى العديد من الباحثات والباحثين، كما أنها مفردة وحيدة تجنب استعمال جملة مفردات للدلالة على المفهوم نفسه، عدا عن قبولها لصيغ الإشتقاقات. وقد حاولتا في هذه الدراسة تقديم: أولا: صورة عامة للخصائص الجندرية للعمل الإعلامي في محطات التلفزة، وهذا القسم اهتمت به الباحثة نهوند القادري عبر استمارة شاملة أخذت بعين الاعتبار الفوارق الجندرية في العمل الإعلامي المرئي بشكل عام. ثانيا: تقديم صورة عن التوزيع الجندري تبعا للأقسام مع محاولة التعرف على التلفزيون من خلال بنيته، وهذا القسم اهتمت به الباحثة سعاد حرب عبر دراسة الحالات.
