لقد عرف العرب، وحتى الآن، ثلاثة مشاريع تحديثية ترتبط بإمتلاك المعرفة، مشروع "محمد علي" بمصر، ومشروع الرئيس "جمال عبد الناصر" في مصر أيضاً ومشروع الرئيس "صدام حسين".
إن هذه المشاريع وإن اختلفت بأشخاصها وبعض مضامينها ووسائلها إلا أنها كانت خطوة جيدة وجريئة على طريق المعرفة والتكنولوجيا؛ صحيح إن الغرب كان بالمرصاد لها وأفشلها وأذل أصحابها إلا أن هذه المشاريع نفسها لم تكن تحتوي على بذمور الإستمرارية، بمعنى أخر كان يعتورها أو ينقصها التالي:
-المناخ الديمقراطي الضروري لهكذا مشروع حتى ينجح.
-التركيز أكثر من اللزوم في هذه المشاريع على القوة العسكرية.
-إرتباطها بالفرد والفردية.
خلاصة القول، إنني متشائم على المستوى الشخصي لمستقبل هذا الوطن الذي انتمي إليه ومتشائم إعلامنا العربي، فإعلامنا رغم التقنيات المتطورة التي يستخدمها ما زال في مضمونه متخلف ولا يتماشى مع العصر (العولمة وإفرازتها) وإعلامنا جبان لأنه لا يملك سلاح المواجهة في الداخل (ظلم وتعسف الحاكم، المرأة الأمية، العصبية الذهبية إلخ)، كما أنه غير مواجه وغير مقاتل للأخطار الخارجية (تشويه صورتنا، الغزو الثقافي) وإعلامنا ما زال مجزاً وقطرياً.
إن إنتسابنا إلى منطقة جغرافية ذات ميزات متشابهة تربط بينها وشائج واقعية وتاريخية وإستعمالنا لغة واحدة إضافة إلى الروابط الأخرى الروحية والتاريخية والحضارية، كل ذلك يملي علينا مبادرات إضافية يصعب تحقيقها في مستوى كامل للدول النامية بينما هي ميسورة المنال على الصعيد العربي لذلك ينبغي لنا نحن العرب ضبط إستراتيجية عمل للنهوض بأجهزتنا الإعلامية وتحسين جدواها، تكون مستمدة من النظام الإعلامي الجديد.
