توصف هذه الحقبة الأخيرة من القرن العشرين بعصر التكنولوجيا الراقية وبعصر المعلومات والتفجر المعرفي. فقد أسهمت الوسائل الحديثة للاتصال والمواصلات في الإسراع بنشر المعلومات إلى الحد الذي نستطيع معه في المستقبل القريب أن نتوقع انه لن يكون في مقدور فرد أو جماعة الهرب من تلك التأثيرات، التي سوف تتلاحق عليها من كل صوب اتصالي. تتضح تلك الحقائق، ابان العقد الأخير، من ازدياد تدفق البحوث العلمية الخاصة بالاتصال الإنساني بشكل مذهل. يعزى هذا التدفق الى الاستخدام المتسع لمصطلح ((اتصال)) وإلى الاهتمام المتزايد ببحوث الاتصال من جانب أنظمة علمية عديدة. ففي دراسة التطورات التي جرت في هذا الميدان يمكن ان نعدد اكثر من عشرين نظاما علميا أكاديميا يوفر المضمون والطريق للبحث في بعض جوانب التفاعل الإنساني. منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية وحتى الان تطورت تقنيات الاعلام والاتصال بشكل يضاهي تطورها خلال الألفي سنة الماضية. ففي الولايات المتحدة يعمل أكثر من نصف السكان القادرين على العمل (personnes actives) في قطاع الاعلام والاتصال. وتصل النسبة في المانيا الغربية حسب الإحصاء الذي تورده وزارة البحث والتكنولوجيا إلى 35 بالمئة. وفي سويسرا نجد النسبة نفسها. أدى هذا التقدم الهائل والاهتمام بوسائل الاعلام والاتصال إلى ظهور ما يسمى ((بالتواصل الإعلامي)) الفضائي عبر الأقمار الصناعية. وإزاء هذا أصبح من المستحيل على أية جماعة بل على أي فرد الابتعاد عن اية جماعة أخرى.
