يدور موضوع الكتاب حول مفهوم التربية الخاصة، تلك التي تتعلق بتعليم أو تدريس الطلاب ذوي الصعوبات أو الموهوبين الذي يحتاجون إلى احتياجات تعلم خاصة، وهؤلاء هم الطلاب الذين يجدون صعوبة في تعلمهم داخل الصفوف العادية، إذ يحتاجون إلى تربية خاصة. وتشتمل هذه الحالات على: تلاميذ لديهم قصور أو عمي بصري، أو قصور سمعي أو صم أو قصور حجمي أو صحي، أو لديهم صعوبات لغوية في التواصل والإتصال، أو اضطرابات سلوكية أو انفعالية، وتلاميذ لديهم تخلف عقلي.
وبناءً على ما تقدم تم إعداد هذا الكتاب بمشاركة أربعة من أساتذة المناهج وطرق التدريس في كليات التربية في المملكة العربية السعودية، ليكون ركيزة أساسية في ميدان التربية الخاصة وبرامجها ووظائفها ومناهجها ووسائل تعليم الأطفال ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة من عمر ثلاث سنوات وحتى مراحل التعليم المتوسطة (10- 13سنة).
