"قال لي لماذا لا تتزوج يا دعبول الحقيقة لا أدري لماذا... ربما لأنني أطارد شبحاً وأحلم بخيال.. البحث عن من ضاع يستغرق العمر كلهن لم أفكر بالموجود كنت أتطلع لمن اختفت وذهبت كنت أعرف أنها أكبر مني قليلاً ولكن هذا لم يشكل مانعاً لعدم التفكير بها والتطلع إليها... أحياناً كنت أتساءل هل كنت أبحث عنها هي أم عن أمي وأختي فيها؟ عن عائلتي التي احترقت، ونار تنور سليمة وسليمة كانت هي نقطة الوصول بالماضي. لا أدري هل ألسنة اللهب هي التي جذبتني إلى سليمة أم أن سليمة هي اللهب كله والشوق كله والحنين كله، حنين لمن؟ لأي شيء، لا أدري مجرد حنين يسحق الضلوع ويختبئ بين الحنايا والحشا. مقهى الملا عبودي في المربعة أصبح لي بيتاً ثانياً، أسهر فيه إلى أن يغلق، أختبئ فيه من الوحدة والضجر والملل من الليالي الطويلة والأماسي الثقيلة، المقهى محطة انتظار إلى أن يحين موعد المستكي، فموعده مصحوب برنة جرس في رأسي جرس يطن في أذني... أجرجر ساقي وأشحط بنعالي وأسمع صوت قدمي تنسحبان على الرصيف بكثير من الكسل والتواني، ولكن صوت الجرس يحفزني للوصول بسرعة إلى الشريعة والسكلة... ويفعل المستكي مفعوله واحتضني سميري العود وأغفو وهو في حضني لأصحو من النومة الأولى وأنحي العود جانباً برفق وحنو وأنام النومة الثانية نومة الصاحي..".
"دعبول" قصة تدور أحداثها حول دعبول، الشخصية المحورية، الذي فقد عائلته حيث عاد إلى منزله وقد التهمته ألسنة النيران بمن فيه. فتقاذف دعبول المطارح، وتناوب على حياته شخصيات، إلا أن حنينه لأهله ظلّ ذاك الهاجس الذي لم يفارقه للحظة على مدى عمره.
