في دراسته هذه يخوض محمد الحيرش في حقل علوم القرآن، وقد تعامل معه لا باعتباره يحوي كماً متفرقاً من العلوم التي يعني كل منها بجانب من جوانب النص القرآني، بل باعتباره خطاباً نظرياً واصفاً لأصول المعرفة التفسيرية وقواعدها، فإذا كان التفسير ينصرف إلى شرح معاني القرآن وبيانها فإن علوم القرآن بالصورة التي تتحدد في هذا البحث لا تندرج معه في المقصد ذاته. إنها عبارة عن معرفة نظرية بالتفسير تنشغل أساساً بتجريد الكليات والقواعد العامة التي يشترك في أعمالها كل من يخوض في فهم القرآن. وبذلك فقد تعامل المؤلف مع علوم القرآن باعتبارها تمثل في الوعي التأويلي لدى القدماء برنامجاً كلياً ومتكاملاً للفهم إليه يستند عموم المفسرين ...
وبناءاً على ما تقدم جاءت مجموع المحاور المدروسة في هذا البحث تسري بين إشكالات التأويلية القرآنية وإشكالات التأويليات المعاصرة. وقد اتخذ لها المؤلف صيغة تحليلية يصعب رد نسبتها بإطلاق إلى أحد الطرفين. إنه بعبارة أخرى (أفق ثالث) يضعه محمد الحيرش يُتاح لكل طرف فيه أن يقلع عن تطابقه ومناجاته ذاته، ويبحث من خلال تفاعله مع الغير وانفتاحه عليه عن إمكان آخر للتحقق والإنبعاث.
