كان من ثمرة التنقيبات الأثرية في اجاريت إكتشاف رقم سطرت عليها نصوص بخط لم يعرفه أحد عند إكتشافها في شهر أيار من عام 1929.
وما كادت البعثة المكتشفة أن تعلن النبا، وتنشر صور الرقم، حتى انكب الدارسون على قراءتها والفوز بلقب القارئ الأول لها، ففي مدينة هاله بألمانيا تمكن العالم الألماني الشهير هانس باور بتاريخ 27/ 4/ 1930، أي بعد مرور أقل من عام على الإكتشاف، من قراءة الخط وإستنباط الأحرف المؤلفة منها، ففاز بهذا اللقب، بعد أن كان العالم الفرنسي فيرولو قد نبه إلى أن الخط الذي كتبت به النصوص مؤلف من حروف أبجدية.
ويلاحظ المتتبع للأبحاث المنشورة حولها قلة أو ندرة الترجمات العربية، وإن وجدت فهي لا تعنى بالنصوص الأصلية ذاتها.
لذا اعتمدت في هذه الدراسة على النصوص الأصلية، واستعنت بالدراسات الهامة التي قدمها زملاؤنا من قبل، والذين ما انفكوا يحثون الباحثين العرب على ترجمة النصوص إلى لغتهم لتساعد في إجلاء معاني الكثير من المفردات.
ومن هذا المنطلق احتفظت بالكلمة الإجاريتية إذا كانت واردة في العربية، وإذا لم تكن جارية على الألسن وضعت رديف معناها بين قوسين صغيرين ( )، أما المفردات الموضوعة بين قوسين كبيرين [ ]، فهي غير موجودة في الأصل لأنها مشوهة، وقد أضيفت لإتمام المعنى بعد أن استنتجناها من عملية تكرار الجمل أو المعنى.
لقد صنف رواد الدراسات الإجاريتية النصوص، وأرى لزاماً على إتباعهم في هذا المضمار، والتقيد في أرقام النصوص وأسطرها، لأن في ذلك فائدة لمن يرغب في البحث مستقبلاً، إذ سيجد سهولة في التدقيق والمقارنة ليس فقط لأن الأسطر مرقمة ويسهل عليه الإهتداء إليها، بل لأنني أيضاً لم أخرج عن تركيب الجمل الأصلية كما هو وارد في النص الإجاريتي، حتى يمكن للباحث العربي مطابقة المفردات واحدة واحدة، والإستغناء عن ثبت لها في آخر الكتاب.
