لا أجدني يا ابنتي في حاجة إلى البكاء ساعة رحيلك، وإن منيت نفسي بوداعك إلى بيت الزوج الذي يصونك جوهرة في بيت فسيح، تكونين فيه السيدة لا الخادمة، والآمرة لا المأمورة، بيد أن فاقتنا وقلة شأن أبيك دون الرجال، تذرني أسلمك للمجهول وأقبل، على مضض، اشتغالك في بيوت أناس لا أعرفهم.
هناك في المدينة البعيدة، حيث خشيت أن تكوني وسطهم دوني، وأنت الريفية التي لا تدرين ديدنهم، لكني أرى ذاك الموضع أفيد لك من المكوث هنا، بعدما هاجر جل أبناء بلدتنا وبناتها، واستحالت قريتنا "خزيت" خاوية على عروشها، إلا من المرضى والشيوخ.
أي ابنتي، سيكون بوسعك هناك تعلم أشغال بنات المدينة اللائي يعشن هانئات، لا شأننا وقد قدر علينا الكد في الحقول فجراً، والشقاء بالبيوت عصراً.
لن تضطري بعد اليوم إلى الإسراع كل صبح نحو نبع القرية لتظفري بجرة ماء، تعودين بها على دابة منهكة.
كل ما عليك يا ابنتي، مداراة عجوز تقدم بالعمر، وتنظيف بين أهلك الجدد، طهي بعض الطعام والسهر على راحتهم فكوني أبنة بارة، ولن يكون لك منهم إلا خيرُ يغمرك، فتأبين أن تقفلي راجعة إلينا.
