جمع الإمام أبو بكر المَرُّوذيُّ في هذا الكتاب نماذج عديدة لعزَّة المسلم أمام شهوة النفس، وفتنة الدنيا، وهيبة السُّلطان، وأنه لن يحني رأسه لمخلوقٍ مُتجبِّرٍ، ولا لحاكم طاغٍ، ولا لقوةٍ من قوى الأرض جميعاً.
ولا بأس من ذكر مثالٍ لما كان عليه السَّلفُ: فقد روى بإسناده إلى عمرو بن طلحة القنَّاد، أنه قال: مرَّ سليمان بن عبد الملك على المدينة يريد مكة، فقال: هل بالمدينة أحدٌ قد أدرك عدَّةً من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم؟ فقيل له: أبو حازم، فأرسل إليه، فدعاه، فلمَّا دخل عليه، قال له: يا أبا حازم، ما هذا الجفاءً؟!.
قال له أبو حازم: يا أمير المؤمنين، وأي جفَاءٍ رأيت مني؟ قال: أتاني وجوه أهل المدينة، ولم تأتني، قال: يا أمير المؤمنين، أُعيذك بالله أن تقول ما لم يكن، والله ما عرفتني قبل، ولا أنا رَأيتُكَ؛ فالتفت سليمانُ إلى مُحَمَّدِ بن شهاب الزهريِّ فقال: أصاب الشيخُ وأخطأتُ أنا، فقال سليمانُ: يا أبا حازم، ما لنا نكرهُ الموتَ؟ قال: لأنكم أخربتم آخرتكم، وعمَّرْتُم الدنيا، فكرهْتُمْ أن تنتقلوا من العمران إلى الخرابِ.
(هذه هي عزَّةُ العُلَمَاءِ، عزَّتُهم لأنَّهُم يحفظُون في صدورهم كلمات الله، ويحملُونَ في أيديهم مصابيحَ الهدايةِ، ويملكون في خزائن قلوبهم أغلى الكنوزِ، وأثمنَ الثَّرواتِ، وأشرف المواريثِ، وهو تراثُ النُّبوةِ، التي يغيرها يعيشُ الخلقُ في تيه المادِّيَّةِ، وظلام الجاهليَّة، وضلالات الأهواءِ والأوهامِ، فمن أقومُ منهم قيلاً، وأهدى سبيلاً؟).
هذا الكتاب يضربُ لنا أروعَ صُوَرِ الأخلاقِ، وأجملَ صفحاتِ السُّلوكِ الإنسانيِّ، في ترجمة القِيَم العُليا، وتجسيدِ الفضائلِ، والآدابِ، والمُثُلِ، والمكارمِ والأخلاقِ، لِما كانت عليه أُمَّةُ الإسلام التي هي خيرُ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ للنَّاسِ، صنَّفهُ الإمامُ أبو بكر المَرّوْذيُّ أحدُ تلامذة الإمام "أحمد بن حنبل"، والدكتور "عامر حسن صبري" بالتَّخريجِ والضَّبطِ.
