"من غاب عنه المطرب" أحد كتب الثعالبي المعروفة المهمة، وتتجلى أهميته في إحتوائه على نصوص شعرية ونثرية لعدد كبير من الشعراء والأدباء، وأكثرهم من شعراء العصر العباسي وأدبائه، فهذا لهذا أحد مصادر الأدب العباسي الذي لا غنى للدارس والباحث من الرجوع.
وقد عمل الكاتب في إعداد هذه النسخة الجديدة من الكتاب كما يأتي: 1-حاول الإعتماد على النسخة المخطوطة (د) في تثبيت النصّ، أضاف نصوصاً قليلة سقطت من النسخة المعتمدة إليها من النسخ الآخر، ذكر في الحواشي روايات النسخ الآخر، خرّج النصوص إلا القليل جداً، ضبط النصوص وخاصة الشعرية منها، ترجم الأعلام بحسب الأهمية، وألمح إلى المعروفين المشهورين منهم، شرح ما بدا له غامضاً من الألفاظ، ذكر بحور الأبيات، صنع فهارس الكتاب، أثبت في الهامش وجه الورقة ورقم الصفحة للمخطوطة (د)، واستعمل الرمزين (أ) للوجه، و(ب) للظهر.
