في هذا الكتاب شرح لهذه الحجة التي تسمى بــ"حجة الوداع"، لأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ودَّع المسلمين فيها، وتسمى بــ"حجة الوداع"، لان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بلَّغ الناس فريضة الله في الحج قولاً وعملاً.
وقد خطب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في هذه الحجة عدة خطب منها خطبة في اليوم التاسع من ذي الحجة، وهو "يوم عرفة"، و"عرفة" مكان خارج حدود الحرم، وتشبه القوس لإحاطة الجبال بها من الشرق والشمال والجنوب، والوقوف بعرفة من أعظم أركان الحج، لقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "الحجُّ عَرَفَة"، رواه أبو داود والترمذي، والنسائي، وابن ماجه، وأحمد، والحاكم، أي: معظم الحج هو الوقوف بعرفة، فلا حج لمن فاته الوقوف بها، ومن ثمَّ أصبحت هذه الخطبة سنة نبوية تلقى في كل عام.
