يهدف هذا الكتاب نحو دراسة معمارية تشرح تطور العناصر المعمارية، والإنشائية، والزخرفية التي تكونت منها العمارة الإسلامية في مصر، مع تحليل للقيم للمعمارية التي يحتويها هذا التراث الخالد. ثم بيان مدى ما تأثرت به-العمارة الإسلامية في مصر- من مؤثرات اكتنفتها بتواجدها مع بلدان أخرى لأزمتها في ركب الحضارة الإسلامية، واستمت عمارتها بصبغة حضارات سابقة.
ومن ثم فإن منهاج هذه الدراسة لن يكون على النهج التقليدي أي بشرح كل مبني على حده، وإنما هي دراسة شمولية لتطور العنصر ووظيفته خلال حقبة طويلة من الزمان، حتى يتم فيما بعد تحليل هذا العنصر بالذات من حيث تطور المساقط وعناصرها ووظائفها، ومكامن الجمال وقيمه في الواجهات، والتصميم الداخلين وتركيب عناصر كل منهما. كما تحاول هذه الدراسة أيضاً تحليل العوالم الاجتماعية والمناخية التي تأثر بها التصميم، ثم العوامل البصرية كإحدى المحددات في تشكيل عناصر المبنى بعضها ببعض، وعلاقته بالنسيج العمراني الذي يحيطه.
إن الهدف من دراسة التراث المعماري هو محاولة لاستخلاص القيم والمبادئ المعمارية في تلك المباني وإدخالها في أسلوب معماري جديد يعبر عن الشخصية المعمارية المصري الإسلامية، بحيث تتعايش وتتكامل وتنسجم العمارة الجديدة مع العمارة القديمة، وشوارع القاهرة الفاطمية بها من النماذج والأنماط التي أقيمت في عصور متعددة، ولكنها وإن اختلفت معبرة عن كل عصر وكل فترة إلا أنها عبرت عن الشخصية المعمارية المصرية التي سادت وسيطرت على الشكل العام بها.
