يكشف هذا الكتاب أثر فقد البصر في ثلة من الشعراء القدامى. إذ تجلى ذلك في تفكيرهم وتصويرهم ومعانيهم. وأرغمهم على إعمال الفكر وقدح الذهن، رغبة في مجاراة المبصرين، ونصرة على شعور النقص، فبدا تأثيره وفقاً للأصول النفسية الى أن تجسد في اتجاهين متناقضين: الأول ردة فعل أظهرت صاحبها بالتفلت والإباحية والعنف تمثلت في شعر بشار بن برد، والآخر نهج منحى آخر. فبدا فيه انطوائياً متشائماً سوداوياً، يعد الأعمى في كل حركاته وسكناته عورة، يخشى أن يراها الناس ذاك هو المعري. وفي ذلك ما يدعم عملياً نظرية علم النفس في أثر العاهة في النفس الإنسانية. موضحاً من خلال المادة الشعرية المدروسة أنه ليس من الضروري أن يكون عالم الوجدان مطابقاً لعالم الوقائع وأن يكون الذاتي تكراراً للموضوعي، بل الغالب أن يكون للذاتي واقعيته الخاصة، وعندئذ وحينما يحاول الفنان أن يصنع من الذاتي واقعاً من خلال الصور المحسوسة يبدو هذا الواقع الجديد مغايراً للواقع القبلي المرصود.
