المحاسن في النظم والنثر هو الكتاب الوحيد الذي وصلنا للإمام أبي الحسن نصر بن الحسن المرغيناني، وقال السمعاني عن المؤلف أنه من مشاهير الأئمة والعلماء، وكان له شعر مليح لطيف في الزهد والحكمة، سار في الآفاق وتداولته الرواة والمؤلف يحوي من الشعر أبواب كثيرة: الرثاء، الفخر، الحسب، العلم، الهمة.
هذا كتابٌ ألَّفناهُ من مَحاسِن الكلامِ، وما يُستَجادُ من صَنائِعهِ، لبعضِ إخوانِنا من الرّاغبين في الأدب، والمُنافسينَ فيه، والآنِسيْنَ بِهِ، والقابِسينَ لهُ، على حين طُمْوسٍ من آثارِهِ، وإنصراف هِمَم النُّفوسِ عن آمارِه.
وذَكرنا منهُ ما لا يُسْتغْنَى عنهُ، إذْ كانت فُنونُ البَديعِ أكثرَ من أن تُحصى، ولا يُقْدَرُ فيها بُلوغُ المدى الأقصى.
وهذا عِلْمٌ يجبُ أن تكونَ النَّفْسُ بهِ مَشْغُوفَةً، والهمَّةُ إليه مَصْروفَةً، والأيامُ عليه مَوقوفَةً.
فإنَّ القُرآنَ الذي هو خارجٌ عن النَّظْمِ المَعْقودِ، والنَّثْرِ المَعْهودِ؛ من إحدى المُعجزات القائمةِ إلى يَومِ القيامة، لإختصاصه من البَيان، [69أ] بوُجُوهٍ ومَعانٍ، لا يُناسِبهُ ولا يُقارِبهُ شيءٌ من الكلام، فهو مَطْمَعٌ مُمْتَنِعٌ بَعيدُ المرامِ، ومَن لم يُنفقْ شيئاً من عُمرهِ في مَعرفةِ هذا العِلْم، ولم يَهتَدِ لِطُرقِ الكلامِ من حقيقتِهِ ومَجازِهِ، ومَبْسوطِهِ وإيْجازِهِ، والجَمْعِ بينَ صُدورِهِ وأعجازه، وتلاؤُم ألفاظِهِ، وغير ذلك من أوجهِ البلاغةِ والفصاحَةِ، فكيفَ يعرفُ طَرافَةَ إعْجازهِ؟ أم كيف يَجدُ حلاوَةَ نظمِهِ؟ أم كيفَ يَستطيعُ محاجَّةَ خَصْمِهِ؟... ونحن ذاكرونَ من ذلك طرفاً، لا يُعَدُّ تقصيراً ولا سَرَفاً.
