تكمن قيمة كتاب الثعالبي هذا في أبوا التسعة الأولى، لما تضمنتها من نصوص قيمة، ونقدات فنية، وملاحظات دقيقة في مختاراته للآيات الكريمة، والأحاديث الشريفة، والمقولات البليغة البارعة، للعديد من الأعلام قبل الإسلام وبعده. غير أن الثعالبي على عادته لا يترجم لمن يذكرهم، غذ أنه يغفل ذكر سنوات مواليدهم ووفياتهم، وما يتصل بسيرهم وأخبارهم، وعذره في هذا، أنه يضع نصب عينيه النص، وما ضمنه من قيمة بلاغية، ولأنه بعد هذا لا يريد أن يكون مؤرخ أدب، وخاصة إذا عرفنا أن الكثيرين ممن يذكرهم، معروفون للمعنيين بشؤون النثر والشعر، وقد تناولتهم بالترجمة العديد من مصادر الأدب العربي.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى بتحقيقه حيث اهتم المحقق أولاً: بتخريج جميع الآيات القرآنية الكريمة، ومعظم الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، الواردة في البابين الأول والثاني، وكذلك الحال بالنسبة للمقطوعات الشعرية الواردة في الباب العاشر، وهي تكون نصف المخطوطة.
ثانياً: تقديم تراجم موثقة لحياة الأعلام الذين ورد ذكرهم في جميع الأبواب.
ثالثاً: مقابلة الروايات المختلفة الواردة في نسخ المخطوطة، والإشارة إلى الروايات المغايرة في المصادر الأخرى.
