كثيرة هي الأبحاث النقدية التي عُنيت بدراسة الشرق والغرب في الرواية العربية، لا سيَّما الدراسات النقدية المقارنة في الأدبين الإنجليزي والعربي، لكن القليل منها، هو الذي عني بصورتي الشرق والغرب في السيرة الذاتية العربية.
وربما كان طغيان فنِّ الرواية على السيرة الذاتية، وبخاصة في العصر الحديث، هو الذي جعل النقاد يعنون عناية كبيرة بفنِّ الرواية، الأمر الذي أدى إلى قلة الدراسات حول فنّ السيرة الذاتية، على الرغم من الثراء الفني والفكري لفن السيرة في أدبنا العربي قديماً وحديثاً.
وهذا ما وجه البحث ليعنى بهذا الفن، وبخاصة صورتي الشرق والغرب، في سيرتين محوريتين في أدب السيرة الذاتية العربية، هما: سيرة (الإعتبار) لأسامة ابن منقذ، كونها من السير الذاتية الرائدة في أدبنا العربي القديم، وسيرة (الأيام)، لطه حسين، كونها من السير الذاتية التي كثرت الدراسات النقدية حولها في أدبنا العربي الحديث.
على أن إهتمام البحث لا يقف عند دراسة صورتي الشرق والغرب فحسب، ولكنه يعنى بهاتين الصورتين من خلال المعالجة الفكرية والنقدية لهما، وتأتي هذه الدراسة لتكمل جهود الدارسين السابقين في هذا الحقل الأدبي الثري في الأدب العربي القديم والحديث.
