إن حوار الثقافة العربية مع غيرها من الثقافات، خاصة الثقافة الغربية، يقتضي الاعتراف المتبادل. وهو غير حاصل بسل موقف أصوليتين: أصولية إسلامية تختزل الثقافة العربية الإسلامية بتعددها وتنوعها إلى دين، وتختزل الدين إلى عقائد متشددة، وأصولية غربية تعتقد أن قيم الحداثة هي قيم غربية حصراً، فلا طريق إذاً للتحديث سوى التغريب.
إذا كنا نعتبر أن الثقافة رؤية ومبدأ للسياسات، كيف تكون سياستنا في التربية والتعليم منتجة لرأسمال بشري مندمج ومنافس في عالم اليوم؟ ما هي قيمنا الثقافية القابلة للتبادل في سوق القيم، ومكونة لعقلية حداثية، ما هي رؤيتنا لبناء اقتصاد اجتماعي ومنافس معاً، وكيف نبني منظومة قيم تحفز إلى المبادرة، والابتكار، والإقبال على العمل المنتج وأخلاقياته، وضبط الوقت كنظام للحياة والإنتاج وتخطيط المستقبل؟ كيف نربي على احترام الكرامة الإنسانية وجعل حقوق الإنسان نمطاً للحياة؟ ذلك هو مفهوم الثقافة الذي نأخذ به ونعرض لمجالاته ونناقش قضاياه في هذا الكتاب.
