إنّ قضية المعوقين قضية قديمة من قضايا الإنسان والإنسانية، وإن التعوق لم يكن أمراً مرغوباً من لدن الإنسان.
لذا حارب الإنسان التعوق منذُ القدم، وقد أولى المجتمع الإسلامي إهتمامه الشديد برعاية المعوقين وخصص لهم من يساعدهم على الحركة والتنقل، وأكد على حسن معاملاتهم، واعتبرت حالة العوق إختباراً من الله سبحانه وتعالى.
إن ممارسة المعوق للأنشطة الرياضية تساعده على بناء الكفاءة البدنية عن طريق تقوية وبناء أجهزة جسمه وتمكن الفرد المعوق من تحمل الجهود البدني ومقاومة التعب.
لذا فإن ممارسة المعوق للأنشطة الرياضية ستعمل على محاربة العيوب والتشوهات وتساعد على النحو الطبيعي، وما ينتجُ عنها من تكوين الجسم القوي المتناسق، والتجارب تدل على أنه كلما انغمر المعوق في أداء الفعاليات الرياضية اكسبته خبرات متنوعة وهذا بدوره يؤدي إلى إكتسابه العادات الإجتماعية المرغوبة.
إن رياضة المعوقين هي عملية تربوية موجهة لها أغراضها وأهدافها وأهميتها في الوقت الحاضر فهي لم تعد ألعاباً وبطولات ولكنها وسيلة لتحقيق غاية وهدف شاملين، وسيظل المعوق قادراً على العطاء والإبداع مهما كان عوقه ما دام هناك قلباً نابضاً وعقلاً مفكراً.
