إن معرفة المصادر العربية والتعمق في مادتها هو أمر ملح وضروري للباحثين وطلبة الدراسات العليا. وهذا الكتاب يعنى وتحديداً، بالمصادر العربية الإسلامية الأدبية وما يلحق بها من مصادر تاريخية تشترك معها في الرواية الأدبية، ككتب المثالب مثلا، كما أنه يضم دراسات عن كتب مفقودة ونصوصاً مجموعة منها، ودراسات نقدية لبعض كتب التراث المحقق. وقد كانت بعضٌ من هذه الدراسات قد نشرت في مجلات عربية، إلا أن الباحث رأى جمعها في كتاب ليطلع عليها الباحثون، وتكون أيسر في كتاب واحد بدلاً من البحث عنها متناثرة.
البحث في مصادرنا العربية الإسلامية ذو متعة للباحثين والمنقبين، لأننا نكتشف كل يوم خبراً عن مخطوطة نادرة أو كتاب مفقود أو نص يلقي الضوء على مسألة غامضة في تراثنا، لذلك حاول الباحث ما أمكنه التنقيب في المصادر كاشفاً بعضاً من خباياها، في كتب المثالب ودواوين القبائل، وبعض نصوص من مؤلفات مفقودة لأبي تمام وابن الكلبي مثلاً وتنبيهات على تحقيق بعض مصادر التراث مثل كتاب الزهرة للأصفهاني وشعر الشنفرى الأزدي.
