الرواية –في تداخل شيق- تجمع المعقول واللامعقول في عالم زاخر بالشخصيات الغريبة والمخيفة والتي تعيش حياتها في أزقة القاهرة الفاطمية. في سرد سلس وممتع تحملنا الرواية في كابوس مرعب تحكمه الشهوات والسحر والطقوس الصوفية والشعائر الطربية.
الرواية تسجيل بارع للتاريخ الاجتماعي في تلك الحقبة من تاريخ القاهرة أيام المماليك،إنها حكاية الصناديق التي تحوي صناديق، بكل ما تتميز به من غرابة وإبداع، أبطالها شخصيات مثل القاص يول، وفاطمة المهلكة، وأبي الهررة. إنها تأمل لازم في الواقع والوهم وفي سرد القصص وفق نمط ألف ليلة وليلة. كتبها "روبرت أيروني "الأستاذ في التاريخ الإسلامي وخصوصاً في العصور الوسطى. لقد ترجمت الرواية إلى ثلاث عشر لغة وهذه المرة الأولى التي تترجم فيها إلى العربية.
السيد أيروني مستشرق له بال طويل في الأدب والتاريخ العربي والإسلامي. لقد ترجم إلى الإنكليزية لكبار شعراء العرب في كتاب أمسه "الخيل والليل في الصحراء" وما يزال الكتاب أفضل مرجع بتلك اللغة لشعراء مثل المتنبي والبحتري. له مؤلفات تاريخية تعتبر المرجع الأول في تدوين التاريخ الفاطمي والأيوبي كما له روايات عدة جعلت منه اسماً لامعاً في الساحات الأدبية والأكاديمية في بريطانيا والغرب عموماً.
