هذا الكتاب استمرار لمحاولاتنا المتواصلة، التي تحولت إلى مشروع مترابط، لكشف نسق ديانة العرب قبل الإسلام، وفك مغاليقها. وهو يدخل إلى هذه الديانة من مدخل جديد آخر، ألا وهو الألقاب. فيمسك بألقاب عدد من الشخصيات، إضافة إلى ألقاب بعض القبائل، ويحاول أن يكشف معناها الديني.
والحق أن ذاكرة المجتمعات الشفاهية ذاكرة أسطورية أكثر منها ذاكرة تاريخية. فهي تنسى بسرعة نسبية الأحداث الواقعية، أو قل تسمح لها بالبقاء أجيالا قليلة ثم تمحوها، لتبقى الأحداث الأسطورية. فالأحداث الأسطورية هي الحاضر، وهي التاريخ الحق. أي أنها ليست ذكريات بل حياة معيشة. وهذا يختلف بالطبع عن الذاكرة الفردية. فالذاكرة الفردية بحاجة إلى الذكريات الواقعية، لأنها تجربتها ومعرفتها بالواقع.
وكما هو واضح فقد أخذنا اسم هذا الكتاب من لقب الشخصية الأسطورية الشهيرة جدا في التقليد العربي، والتي تحدثنا عنها، شخصية عمرو بن هند، الذي حمل لقب: (مُضَرِّط الحِجَارة). وهو لقب فهم على غير معناه، الأمر الذي يحدث دوما في الألقاب العربية القديمة، سواء كانت ألقاب أفراد أو ألقاب قبائل. فالانقطاع عن الديانة الجاهلية، وعن أساطيرها، إضافة إلى الانقطاع عن الاستعمالات الأقدم للكلمات يؤدي إلى سوء فهم فظيع لمعاني بعض الألقاب. وهو أمر خطر جدا. فحين نفقد معنى لقب عمرو بن هند مثلا، نكون في الواقع قد فقدنا أسطورته وتهنا عنه وعنها. وبهذا المعنى، فإن كتابنا هذا هو كتاب في دحض سوء الفهم ومواجهته. أي أنه كتاب تصحيح للتصحيف المعنوي الذي تعرضت له الألقاب في كثير من الأحيان.
