هذا واحد من الكتب القليلة الّتي تسعى إلى تأسيس قراءة جديدة في التراث العربيّ الضخم المهمل؛ وتكمن أهميّته، أوّلاً، في أنّه يعيد الإعتبار للمرويّات والإخباريّات العربيّة الّتي ندر أن التفت إليها البحث العلميّ العربيّ المعاصر؛ وأنّه يحاول، ثانياً، أن يعيد تركيب تلك المرويّات شديدة التهشّيم، بأناة ودقّة مدهشتين، ليخرج بإقتراح مقنع للصورة الّتي كان عليها الوعي العربيّ في مرحلة ما قبل الإسلام، وأنّه يقدّم، ثالثاً، قراءته الخاصّة الجديدة - بحقّ - لتلك المادّة التراثيّة المرمّمة بمهارة عالية.
إنّ الأمثال العربيّة ليست صياغات لغويّة أدبيّة ذات منشأ واقعيّ، كما يرى كثير من الدارسين العرب الأوائل والآخذين عنهم من المحدثين، بل هي مخلّفات أسطوريّة يمكن إستخدامها للبحث عن طبيعة (الدين) الّذي كان العرب يؤمنون به في الجاهليّة، والّذي لا نكاد نعرف عنه شيئاً.
وإنّ من شأن هذه القراءة الجديدة، إذا استكملت على نحو علميّ، أن تعيد بناء تصوّرنا كلّه عن ذاتنا الحضاريّة، وأن تساعدنا على إعادة النظر في كثير من القراءات (الناقصة) الّتي سبق أن أنتجها الدارسون العرب وغيرهم في غياب معرفتهم العلميّة بمعتقدات العرب قبل الإسلام.
إنّه كتاب غنيّ ومدهش، ويشكّل إمتداداً لكتب أخرى أنتجت في هذا الحقل المهمّ من حقول الدراسات العربيّة.
