إن معظم المنظمات تعيش اليوم في بيئات سريعة التغيير، وتتصف بمتغيرات عديدة وظواهر جديدة مثل العولمة والأسواق غير المنتظمة وطلبات الزبون المتغيرة، والمنافسة المتزايدة على المنتج / السوق وإن الهدف الرئيس من إدارة أي منظمة هو الحرص والبقاء والنمو في دنيا الأعمال وتحقيق نوع من الإستمرارية في ظل المتغيرات المحلية والعالمية.

وهذا ما قام به المؤلفات في هذا الكتاب وذلك في ستة فصول وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: "الدراسات السابقة حول المقارنة المرجعية"، الفصل الثاني: "تأطيرات نظرية للمقارنة المرجعية"، الفصل الثالث: "الميزة التنافسية"، الفصل الرابع: "علاقة المقارنة المرجعية ببعض الإتجاهات الإدارية الحديثة"، الفصل الخامس: "مقارنة أبعاد الميزة التنافسية قبل وبعد تطبيق المقارنة المرجعية".
