جمع الإمام النووي في هذا الكتاب طائفة من الأذكار أوضح مظانها مع بيان صحيح الأحاديث وحسنها وضعيفها ومنكرها، فإنه مما يفتقر إلى معرفته جميع الناس إلا النادر من المحدثين، كما ضم جملاً من النفائس في علم الحديث، ودقائق الفقه، ومهمات القواعد، ورياضيات النفوس، والآداب التي تتأكد معرفتها على السالكين، ويذكر جميع ما يذكره مُوضحاً ليسهل فهمه على العوام والمتفقهين.
وقد اقتصر في هذا الكتاب على الأحاديث التي في الكتب المشهورة التي هي أصول الإسلام وهي خمسة: صحيح البخاري، صحيح مسلم، سنن أبي داود والترمذي، والنسائي، وقد روى يسيراً من الكتب المشهورة وغيرها. وأما الأجزاء والمسانيد قلم ينقل منها شيئاً إلا في نادر المواطن ولا يذكر الأصول المشهورة أيضاً من الضعيف إلا النادر مع بيانه ضعفه، وإنما يذكر فيه الصحيح غالباً، ولا يذكر في الباب من الأحاديث إلا ما كانت دلالته ظاهرة في المسألة.
