ولد أبو هلال العسكري في سنة لم تحدد من القرن الرابع الهجري، وقضى جل حياته فيه، وأمتد به العمر بضع سنوات في القرن الذي يليه. والقرن الرابع هو قرن الرقي العلمي والإزدهار الثقافي في حياة العرب. وقد بلغت الحضارة العربية الإسلامية في هذه المرحلة قمة نضجها، وأعطت ثمارها اليانعة ألواناً من المعرفة، وأصنافاً من العلم.
لقد تكاملت في تلك الحضارة مقومات الأصالة والتجدد والنماء، وتضافرت على صنعها عقول مستنيرة وأذهان متوقدة، ومواهب مبدعة. أطلعت على ما حولها من ثقافات واستوعبتها بوعي وإتقان، وسبرت أغوارها بإحاطة وشمول،فتمكنت بجدارة فائقة أن تضيف لهل نتاجاً جديداً، وعطاءً خصيباً.
لقيت هذه المرحلة من لدن الدراسين عناية بالغة وإهتماماً واضحاً حين يتحدثون عن معالم حضارتها، أو حين يترجمون للعلماء والأدباء الذين نبغوا فيها، ومن هنا كثرت الدراسات التي عنيت بكشف حقائقها، وتجلية غوامضها، وتوضيح جوانبها، وألفت في حضارة هذا القرن وأدبه مصنفات مستقلة، وبحوث منفردة.
لذلك فقد تناول هذا الكتاب جوانب الحياة السياسية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية في هذا القرن، وألم بما له علاقة بحياة العلماء والأدباء فيه، لعله يساعدنا في فهم شخصية العسكري وعلمه؛ إذ هيأت له حياة هذا العصر علماً وفيراً وثقافة واسعة، فعبَ من مناهلها الثرة، ومشاربها المتنوعة. وقست عليه مساوئها الإجتماعية ومتاعبها الإقتصادية، فلم ينعم براحة البال، ويسر الحال، وعاش يشكو الفقر والسقاء، زيأسى لضيعة العلماء والأدباء.
