يبحث هذا الكتاب في ظاهرة مهمة من ظواهر العربية، وهي ظاهرة (الفروق) التي تشمل نمطاً من فقهها، وأوضاع ألفاظها، ومسائلها الخاصة، وتشخيص ميلها للتخصيص والتمييز والدقة، بكل وسائلها التعبيرية والبيانية.
وقد عرض المؤلف فيه لهذا المسلك الدلالي في هذه اللغة المتقنة، على ما هو في درس القدماء، والمحدثين، عرضا بهدف التعريف والإحاطة، والتنظيم، فإن الحديث في (الفروق) عند هؤلاء وأولئك تشعب في مواضع متفرقة، وأبواب متناثرة من تصنيفاتهم ومباحثهم.
وللإحاطة بالموضوع، تم تقسيم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب وفق ما يلي: الباب الأول: "ظاهرة الفروق في مصنفات الدارسين"، الباب الثاني: "مظاهر التفريق اللغوي في العربية"، الباب الثالث: "موقف الدارسين من الفروق اللغوية".
