يحكي هذا الكتاب قصّة دومينيك شفالييه مع الشرق الّذي عرفه أثناء رحلاته ومهمّاته العلميّة وغيرها خلال ما يربو على نصف قرن، فقد صوّر شفالييه، بعقله وقلبه، كلّ صغيرة وكبيرة، ودوّن كلّ ما رآه وسمعه ولاحظه من سلوكيّات نظرائه ومستقبليه، معلّقاً عليها، معتمداً على مخزونه المعرفيّ عن التاريخ الإنسانيّ بعموميّته والشرق العربيّ بخصوصيته، إنّه، بإختصار، سيرة ذاتيّة لمؤرّخ لا نظير له، عرف الشرق وأحبّه وانتقده.
لذا كان هذا الكتاب الّذي يحكي قصّة الصراع على السلطة بين قبائل عربيّة معروفة، تسعى لبناء دول عربيّة حديثة ممتدّة في الشرق الأوسط العربيّ منذ بداية القرن العشرين المنصرم.
ولا يغفل الكتاب، أيضاً قصّة صراع الطوائف والأقلّيّات في لبنان وسوريّة والعراق الّتي وجدت نفسها في دول أعدّها الإستعمار، فاستمرّ فيها الصراع من أجل الحفاظ على الوضع القائم الّذي حدّد لها، دون أن يبرز لهذا الصراع نهاية، ولعلّ الأزمات الحاليّة في العراق ولبنان هي دلائل على صدقيّة هذه الرؤية.
أمّا مفاهيم الهويّة، وبناء الدولة، والدين، والعلمانيّة، وأثر هذه المفاهيم على إنتزاع السلطة، فهي حاضرة بقوّة في هذا الكتاب، ليس فقط في الشرق العربيّ، بل في المغرب العربيّ أيضاً.
