لكل واحد من المفكرين الستة، موضوع هذا الكتاب (محمد عزيز الحبابي، عبد الله العروي، محمد عابد الجابري، محمد أركون، حسين مروة، ناصيف نصار)، إشكاليته الفكرية الخاصة المستقلة عن إشكالية الآخر، بأسئلتها ومفاهيمها وحلولها ورهاناتها، غير أنهم يشتركون على الاقل في الدعوة إلى أمرين أساسيين هما: العقل والتاريخ.
جميعهم يحملون همّ زرع العقلانية والتاريخانية في تفكير الأمة لإعادة تربيتها وإعادة قراءة تاريخها وتراثها كي تصبح قادرة على التعاطي مع الحداثة من موقع الإعتزاز بالذات، والإقدام على الفعل التاريخي الخلاق، لم يشاؤا أن يحبسوا إشكالياتهم ضمن حيز دلالي أو تأويلي فحسب، بل راموا أيضاً فتحها على آفاق التعبير.
ذلك أن إعادة النظر في دلالات العقل والتاريخ لا يكفي لتشييد "عصر أنوار عربي جديد"، بل لا بد من تأويلهما تأويلاً حديثاً قادراً على تعبئة الجمهور للقيام بالتغيير المنشود الذي يحقق الإستقلال التاريخي، كانوا جميعاً يفكرون وعيونهم على النهضة، بحثاً عن أسباب فشلها المبكر، وتنقيباً عن طرق بعثها من جديد على شكل "نهضة عربية ثانية"، أو "عصر تدوين جديد"، فكان العقل مفتاحاً أولياً لمراودة حلمهم.
