تعرض هذا البحث لخمس مشكلات رئيسية، ارتبطت ارتباطاً وثيقاً بالمشكلة السببية. تناول اثنتان منها بشكل موجز، وهما مشكلة السبب والعلة، ومشكلة السبب والتعاقب الزمني. أما المشكلات الثلاث الأخرى –مشكلة السبب والحتم، مشكلة السبب والعلم، ومشكلة السبب والشرط –فقد تعرض لها بشيء من التفصيل، وخصص للأخيرة منها الباب الثاني كله، لأنها تعد من المشكلات الرئيسية التي ارتبطت بالمشكلة السببية، منذ أمد طويل، واكتسبت طابعاً فلسفياً ومنطقياً معاصراً عندما أثارت اهتمام الاتجاهات التحليلية والفينومينولوجية والبرجماتية المحدثة، فسعت جلدة لبناء نسق لمنطق الموجهات السببية، لتؤكد من خلاله أن الضرورة المفترض وجودها لبناء نسق لمنطق الموجهات السببية، لتؤكد من خلاله أن الضرورة المفترض وجودها في العلاقة السببية، ليست سوى ضرورة منطقية.
وكان الدافع الرئيسي لهذا البحث، هو محاولة التعرف على الوظيفة الحقيقية والمكانة الموضوعية للمبدأ السببي، في القرن العشرين، لذلك رأى الباحث "السيد نفادي" من للضروري أن يبحث عن إجابات لأسئلة حصرها على النحو التالي: 1-ما هو المفهوم العلمي للمبدأ السببي؟، 2-ما هو المفهوم الفلسفي للمبدأ السبي؟، 3-ما هي وظيفة المبدأ السببي في العلم؟ 4-هل من المشروع تحويل الضرورة السببية إلى ضرورة منطقية؟
يعالج هذا الكتاب أهم المبادئ الفلسفية والعلمية والمنطقية التي لعبت دوراً في تشكيل الفكر الغربي، ونعني بذلك المبدأ السببي، ولا شك أن هذا المبدأ قد شهد عصوراً زاهية، كما شهد عصور انحطاط بلغت أشدها في عصرنا الحالي وذلك منذ انتهاء عصر الفيزياء النيوترونية وبزوغ عصر الفيزياء الحديثة.
ولقد حاولت الاتجاهات المتعددة –ولا تزال- تحويل الضرورة السببية، التي تنتمي إلى عالم الظواهر الطبيعية، إلى ضرورة منطقية، فظهر ما يسمى بمنطق (الجهات السببية) المعتمد على المنطق الشرطي. لذا فإن هذا الموضوع ن الخصوبة والأهمية إلى الحد الذي يدفعنا إلى محاولة التعرف على الوظيفة الحقيقية أو المكانة الموضوعية له في عصرنا الحالي، محاولين التعرف على طريقة التفكير التي يمارسها العقل العربي.
