منذ كوبر نيكوس، إلى غاليليه، ثم نيوتن وديكارت وغيرهم كثير، عبر عصر الأنوار، كان للاكتشافات العلمية التأثير الكبير على الفلسفة. ولم يؤثر اكتشاف علمي على الفلسفة بقدر تأثير السببية، هذه النظرية التي وقفت على الحد ما بين العلم والفلسفة، بل يمكن القول إنها جمعت العلم والفلسفة.
وبقدر ما تطّورت العلوم، وزاد تأثيرها، بقدر ما ظهرت النظريات الفلسفية التي تستند إلى تلك الاكتشافات العلمية، وصولاً إلى ظهور فلسفة العلم، وهي الفلسفة التي تركت تأثيراً كبيراً، ولا تزال، على معظم العلوم الإنسانية.
إذ كانت السببية ارتبطت بنحو أو بآخر بآينشتاين، فإن أفكارها الفلسفية واكبت الإنسان منذ العصور القديمة خلال بحثه عن تفسير للظواهر الطبيعية. وكانت من أهم المبادئ التي تجلّت على شكل قوانين دقيقة ترافقت مع التطوّر العلمي إلى حد جعلها تبلغ من العمومية أن تحكم تفسير جميع أحداث الكون.
إن الإشكالات التي طرحتها الاكتشافات العملية على فكرة البحث عن الحقيقة واليقين بمعانيها الفلسفيّة والدينية، أعادت فلسفة العلم طرحها على العلم نفسه.
حول هذه الإشكالات والتحولات التي حصلت على السببية يدور هذا الكتاب، مستعرضاً أفكار أبرز الفلاسفة الذين شكلت فلسفاتهم وموقفهم من العلم بداية عهد جديد للفلسفة.
