بالرغم من نجاح الإنسان في معرفة الأشياء المادية وتقدم العلوم التجريبية ونموها المطرد، إلا أن هناك تسليماً عاماً بين علماء هذه العلوم من جهة وبين علماء المنطق ومناهج البحث من جهة أخرى، بأن الإنسان عاجز عن معرقة حقيقة الشيء سواء كان مادياً أو غير مادي، وأن الذي يجنيه الإنسان من المعرفة والعلم إنما هو إدراك خصائص الشيء وأحواله وليس حقيقته.
وفي هذا الكتاب خمسة محاضرات دوّنها الدكتور "فاروق الدسوقي" الحائز على جائزة الملك فيصل العالمية للدراسات الإسلامية. وهي تدور حول حقيقة الإنسان في المفاهيم القرآنية. في المحاضرة الأولى، حاول لمؤلف التعريف بخصائص الإنسانية، وبالذات الخاصية الجوهرية التي يتميز بها الإنسان عن سائر المخلوقات الأخرى، أما محاضرته الثانية فجاءت للتعريف بالعلاقة القائمة بين الإنسان والزمان، وذلك لأن الزمان والمكان هما الإطاران اللذان يوجد فيهما كل مخلوق، ولأن الإنسان أحد أفراد العالم وجزء منه.
ثم حاول بعد ذلك معرفة طبيعة الإنسان الأولى التي خلقه وفطره الله عز وجل من خلال الفطرة الذي هو عنوان المحاضرة الثالثة. أما علاقة الإنسان بغيره من الكائنات الوجودية بينها، فسيتعرف عليه القارئ من خلال حقيقة الخلافة، وذلك في المحاضرة الرابعة. أما المحاضرة الخامسة والأخيرة فعقدها المؤلف للبحث عن المميز الجوهري للإنسان الذي سيضع أيدينا على سرّ الإنسانية وذلك نتيجة دراسة موضوع الأمانة. ولكي تكون المفاهيم التي حاول المؤلف الوصول إليها إسلامية خالصة، كان مرجعه أولاً وأخيراً مصدري الإسلام: القرآن الكريم والسنة الصحيحة.
