تدخل دراسة النزاع السوري-الإسرائيلي ضمن الدراسات السياسية التي يدور موضوعها حول نشوء الاحتكاك الطويل الأمد على امتداد خطوط الهدنة السورية-الإسرائيلية وتطوره وآثاره في الفترة 1949-1967 ونقطة القطع فيها هي حزيران 1967 تاريخ الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لمرتفعات الجولان السورية.
وانطلاقاً من أهمية هذا النزاع عمد المؤلف "محمد مصلح" إلى تقديم هذه الدراسة التفصيلية ذات الخلفية التاريخية واللمحة الجغرافية عن منطقة الجلان من خلال تفحص ثلاث حالات تلقي ضوءاً على سياسة سورية وإسرائيل الواحدة تجاه الأخرى، في فترة 1949-1967 عندما كان من المفترض أن يسري مفعول اتفاقية هدنة... كما يعالج السياستين السورية والإسرائيلية تجاه الجولان بعد احتلال إسرائيل المنطقة في حرب 1967 والمفاوضات بينهما في شأن الجولان ما بين 1991 وسنة 1996 كجزء من عملية السلام.
يعيد هذا الكتاب بدايات الصراع السوري-الإسرائيلي المتعلق بمرتفعات الجولان، حيث نشب صراع حاد بشأن المنطقة المجردة من السلاح التي كانت أنشئت بموجب اتفاقية الهدنة (1949).
هذا الكتاب بحث معمق في مشكلة الجولان، ودراسة سياسية تفسيرية للصراع السوري-الإسرائيلي. وهو يقدم خلفية تاريخية لهذه المشكلة من خلال تفحص ثلاث حالات تلقي ضوءاً على سياسة سورية وإسرائيل، الواحدة تجاه الأخرى، في الفترة ما بين سنة 1949 وسنة 1967. وتعالج الدراسة أيضاً السياستين السورية والإسرائيلية إزاء الجولان بعد حرب حزيران/يونيو 1967، ثم المفاوضات بشأن الجولان في فترة 1991-1996.
