في كتابه "مدخل إلى التاريخ الطبيعي" يقدم الكاتب خير شواهين محاولة علمية لدرس كل مكونات الطبيعة، وكما يقول "ندرسها لنتعلم منها كيف نستفيد منها وكيف نحميها، ونتفكر في مخلوقات الله تعالى ليزداد إيماننا بربنا سبحانه وتعالى".
والوسائل التعليمية التي يقدمها هذا الكتاب هي من الطبيعة المحيطة بنا من أشجار وبحار وأراضٍ وحيوانات وغيرها مما تحفل به البيئة الطبيعية التي يعيش وسطها الإنسان.
الكتاب في مضمونه ذو طابع تعليمي حيث يقدم تجارب عملية يستطيع من خلالها القارئ أن يتعلم كيف يحتفظ بعينات من (الطحالب) في عبوات زجاجية، وأي محلول يناسبها وكيفية تجفيفها، وإستخدامها في تجارب علمية خاصة بالبنات، كما سيتعرف القارئ على أنواع (الفطريات) وكيفية إستخلاصها من الطبيعة وتربيتها - زراعتها - للإستفادة منها، وكيف يجمع النباتات الزهرية المفيدة للصحة ويقوم بتجفيفها وتصنيفها والتي يمكن أن يستفاد منها في حياته الدراسية والمهنية، وتأتي الرسوم المرفقة لتشرح بالتفصيل أنواعها وأشكالها المختلفة.
إلى ذلك، يقدم الكتاب طرقاً مختلفة لتربية الحيوانات والطيور وكيفية الإستفادة منها، وعملية (التحنيط) لبعضها، ومثلها الحياة البرمائية وما تحويه من حشرات وزواحف وسلاحف، والبحار وما تحويه من أسرار وعجائب.
ويختتم الكتاب بتاريخ الحياة على سطح الأرض في حقب مختلفة منها: العصور الجيولوجية، والحقب ما قبل الكميري، وحقب الباليوزي، والدور الأوردوفيشي والدور السيلوري، والدور الديفوني... وصولاً إلى العهد الذي ظهرت فيه الطبيعة مع البنات والحيوان والإنسان.
يستفاد من هذا الكتاب طلاب المدارس والجامعات وعلماء الأحياء والجيولوجيا وكل مهتم بأشكال الحياة على الأرض وكيفية الإستفادة من البيئة الطبيعية...
