إن من أعظم الجهل قلب السعادة إلى شقاء، وتبديد الأموال حين الأفراح من أجل الشهرة الزائفة، والرياء الممقوت. وهذا ما يفعله أكثرنا في الأفراح كلها، وخاصة الزواج، حتى بات هماً يثقل الظهور، وذلك بسبب ما يكتنفه من تكاليف مالية باهظة، وتقاليد زائفة، ناحية عن حب الشهرة، والرياء، وطلب التفاخر. ولما كان الكثيرون يقعون في هذه الهوة، أجهلاً منهم بإسلامهم، وإهمالاً لأوامر ربهم تعالى، وتنكراً لهدي نبيهم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وسلوك أصحابه رضوان الله عليهم، رأي محمود مهدي الاستانبولي نشر هذه الرسالة "منكرات الأفراح" وهي من مطبوعات وزارة الأوقاف في جمهورية مصر العربية، بأقلام بعض علماء الأزهر، محققاً أحاديثها، ومعلقا عليها مما يزيدها وضوحاً، ويتمم موضوعاتها. وهذه الرسالة تعالج مشكلة المبالغة في الحفلات التي تقام في الأفراح بشيء من التفصيل، مع مقدمة يدور الحديث فيها عن وصف بعض أفراح الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وولائمهم ليكونوا مثلاً يحتذى.
