فنُّ الأدب روض عذب مونقٌ أريض، وعبابٌ زاخر يفيض باللآلي المثمنة ولا يغيض، وسماء شموسها بدائع لا ينوبها كسوف، وأقمارها روائع لا يلمُّ بها خسوف، بروجها لكواكب المحاسن منازل، وغمائمها هتَّانة بوابل المعروف لكل سائل.
فطوبى لمن كرع من معينه، واستروح ربا رياحينه وأزاهيره، وذاق ثمرات الحبور من حدائق مقاماته، واحتسى كؤوس لذات اللطائف من حاناته، واهتدى بأنوار أنجمه الهادية لمن ضل عن منهج المعارف، وظفر بكنوزه المخفية عن الجاهل بقدره لا عن العارف، وسرح نظره فيما اشتمل عليه هذا الكتاب النفيس، الذي هو طرفةٌ للأديب ونزهةٌ للجليس.
كتاب جمع فيه ما باهر الزهر من فرائده بنظامه البديع، ونثر فيه من الظرائف ما أزرت أنواره بأنوار الربيع، يستغني به المجد لتحصيل ما يسر من سلافة العصر، عن قلائد العقيان ودمية القصر؛ فخرائد مغانيه متحليات بجواهر البيان، الفائقة على عقود الجمان، فما «ريحانة الألبا» وزهرة الحياة الدنيا؛ إذا فاح من أردانهنَّ نفح الطيب، وتلألأت أضواء وجوههن التي هي منية اللبيب؟!
وجوهٌ لا تزال تضيء حُسناً
لمثل جمالها خُلق الغرامُ
تجد في طياته اللطائف، ونوادر النكات والظرائف، انتخبه مؤلفه رحمه الله تعالى من نفائس مجامع الأدب، يميس على أترابه بالطراز المنقوش ومروج الذهب.

قسمه مؤلفه رحمه الله تعالى ورتبه على ستة أبواب؛ فذكر لنا لطائف لطفاء اليمن الميمون والحرمين الشريفين، وظرائف بلغاء مصر والشام والعراق، وحكايات نبهاء المغرب والروم، وطرائف أذكياء البحرين وعمان، وأدباء الهند وغيرها من البلدان، وحكايات يزول بذكرها كل غم وهم من الأحزان، وليس الخبر كالعيان، فإليكم عقود المرجان، والله ينفع كل مطلع عليه.
