تاريخ كنيسة أنطاكية، ككل تاريخ موضوع، يخص الهوية والوجود والمستقبل ولا بد أن تكون معالجته علمية لتجيب على أسئلة ملحة تتعلق بخصوصية الكنيسة الأنطاكية واستمرارها عبر الزمان: ماذا عن تراثها في مجال الحرية والتعدد والانفتاح؟ هل عرفت، في الواقع، مراحل ازدهار في مجال الحرية والتعدد والانفتاح؟ هل عرفت، في الواقع، مراحل ازدهار ونمو تلت أسوأ مراحل السقوط والتراجع؟ هل يتناسب التزام مؤضنيها حالياً مع حاجات المجتمع ومتطلبات المحيط؟
لقد أتى هذا المؤتمر كمحاولة لاكتشاف بعض تاريخ الكنيسة الأنطاكية عن كتب. وبخاصة أنها تعرضت لتأثيرات عدة أهمها ربما الأحداث السياسية. والمحيط الثقافي، والحالة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، وتطور الذهنيات.
لذا كان لا بد من دراسة هذا التاريخ في إطار التعددية التي استمرت عبر العصور. فامتزج تاريخ أنطاكية بتاريخ الطوائف المسيحية الآخر في المنطقة، وبتاريخ البطريركيات الأخر المجاورة.
أما التوسع العربي الذي عرّب تدريجياً الليتورجيا والأدب الأنطاكي، فلم يلغ تماماً استعمال اليونانية والسريانية. ما كانت حقيقة مشاركة الكنيسة الأنطاكية وأبنائها في إدارة شؤون مختلف الأنظمة السياسية خلال هذه المرحلة؟.
ما هو تأثير حروب الفرنجة عليها؟ كيف تطورت علاقاتها مع باقي الكنائس الأرثوذكسية خلال سيطرة الحكم العثماني؟ وفي النهاية هل أضعفت تحديات القرن العشرين وتقلباته هذه الكنيسة أو جعلتها أكثر وعياً لرسالتها ولشهادتها؟
