خاضَ خَلَفٌ في أغراضِ الشَعر المختلفة، وولجَ مضمارَ السّياسة، فقَيَّدَ لنا شعرُهُ حوادثَ تاريخيّةَ مهمَّةً، وأَثْرَى كُتُبَ اللُّغة والمعجمات ومصنَّفات النَّحْويِّين بشواهد جمَّة.
هذا ما اتّفَقَ جَمْعُهُ مِنْ أشعارِه المتفرِّقة في بطون المصادر نقدِّمُهُ لقُرَّاءِ العربيّة مُحقَّقاً مشفوعاً بتعاليق تُنير ما انبهم منه مصدَّراً بدراسةٍ عُقدتُ له، ومُذَيَّلاً بفهارسَ فنّيّةٍ شاملةٍ تجعلُ الطريقَ إِليه لاحبةُ مُطمئنَّةُ.
