يحكي أن رجلاً كان يسير في البادية، وفجأة رأى سبعاً مقبلاً نحوه يريد أن يفترسه. ففتش عن مكان يأوي إليه، فلم يجد غير بئر، نبتت في جدارة شجرة تين، فألقى نفسه فيه، وتعلق بغصنين منها، وركز رجليه على حجرين ناتئين في الجدار. ونظر حوله فإذا عند رجليه حيات أربع، قد أخرجن رؤوسهن من جحورهن.
ثم نظر إلى قعر البئر فإذا بثعبان أسود قد فتح فاه، ينتظر سقوطه حتى يلتهمه. ونظر جانباً إلى الغصنين، فإذا في أصلهما جرذان، أحدهما أبيض والآخر أسود، يقرضان الغصنين، دائبين لا يفتران.
وبينما هو في تلك الحالة من الخوف والجوع إذ به يبصر أمامه في الجدار عش نحل قد امتلأ عسلاً، فذاق العسل، فشغلته حلاوته وألهته لذاته، عن التفكير في شيء من أمره، وأن يلتمس الخلاص لنفسه. ونسي أن رجليه على حيات أربع، لا يدري متى يفتكن به، وأن الجرذين دائبان في قطع الغصنين، وأن الأسد متربص به من الأعلى، وأن الثعبان ينتظره من الأسفل.. فلم يزل لاهياً غافلاً، مشغولاً بتلك الحلاوة الزائدة، حتى انقطع الغصنان، ووقع في فم الثعبان، فالتهمه.
هذه القصة تنطوي في حقيقتها على تصوير رمزي لحياة الإنسان، وما يجري عليه فيها، غذ أنه يعيش عمره مطارداً للشهوات وملذاتها ناسياً الموت وعذاب القبر، والنهاية المحتومة.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا جاء مذكراً بهذه اللحظات المحتومة، معتمداً على شهادات أناس ماتوا من ثم عادوا إلى الحياة ليصفوا لحظات انفصال الروح عن الجسد وما رؤوه من تلك اللحظات من صور للآخرة وعذابها، كما وفي الكتاب دراسة تكشف النقاب عن بعض ما يلاقيه الظالم من أنواع العذاب في نار جهنم، وإطلالة سريعة تلقى الضوء على المهر الذي يجب أن يقدمه الإنسان في الدنيا حتى يفوز بالجنة، حيث اللذات التي لا تنقضي، مما لا عين رأت، ولا أذن سمعت، ولا خطر على بال بشر.
