"الأرض الميتة" عنوان ينتمي إلى حقل المسرح التراجيدي بامتياز، ويشكل مفتاحاً لولوج هذا الباب، مؤلف هذا العمل هو الشاعر الإيطالي "غابرييل دانونتشو"؛ ويعتبر من روائع أعمال ذانونتسو، عدا ما له من قيمة أدبية تاريخية لكونه أول تراجيدياته على الإطلاق، وهو يشكل بإجماع النقاد المحاولة الأكثر اكتمالاً لخلق مسرح حديث ذي أثر "تطهيري" على النفس البشرية مستوحى مباشرة من المسرح الإغريقي الكلاسيكي.
وفي العودة إلى جسد النص، الذي يشي باحترام كبير لوحدة الزمان والمكان والفعل،يبني المؤلف دراما دائرية تتحرك العبارة اللغوية فيها داخل الصميم المعتم لصراع العناصر البدائية من (ماء ونار وغبار)، ناضجة، في الوقت نفسه، بجو اسطوري من الشهوات الإيروسية الغامضة والمحرمة، وكل ذلك عبر شخصيات هي بحد ذاتها غاية من الجمال، ولها جميعاً قوة الظهور نفسها، وهو ما يتمظهر عبر النص بشكل واضح ، فلشخصية "آنا" مثلاً، كما يقول أحد النقاد، "قد مات في الظل وجبين في ضوء الحقيقة الأبدي" فيما تجسد شخصية "بيانكا ماريا" العذرية والطهارة. وبهذا يكون اختيار المؤلف لأطلال وخرائب مدينة "ميسينيا" لتكون البيئة التي تدور فيها الأحداث والوقائع، مع ما لهذا المكان من قيمة اركيولوجية وميتافيزيقية، أمرٌ يعمق البعد الأسطوري للعمل ويزيد من قيمته الفنية.
يذكر، أن هذه التراجيديا التي انتهى غابرييل دانتسو من كتابتها في عام 1896م، قد قدمت على المسرح في باريس بعد ذلك بعامين، وكانت البطولة فيها للممثلة المسرحية الشهيرة "سارة برنار" الملقبة بملكة المسرح التراجيدي في ذلك الوقت. أما الترجمة الحرفية لهذه المسرحية فهي "المدينة الميتة" استبدلها الناشر بـ "الأرض الميتة".
