رسائل أبي العلاء المعري التي يضمها هذا الكتاب هي مجموعة من الرسائل ذات مضمونات متعددة كان قد نثرها في أزمان متفاوتة، وهذه الرسائل تعد من عيون الرسائل في هذا الباب، ومن الطراز الأول فيه، إلا أنها لندرتها عزّ تداولها بين الناس، مما دفع "حسان الطيبي" إلى تنسم أخبارها وإعادة نشرها كي تتداول بين الناس.
وقد تمثل الجهد الذي بذله في رسائل أبي العلاء في النواحي الآتية: أولاً: قراءة النص قراءة متأنية في أثر القراءة بغية ضبط النص ووضع علامات الترقيم. ثانياً: توثيق الآيات القرآنية الكريمة ثم تخريجها من مواضعها في القرآن الكريم، وذلك بأن يضم اسم السورة ثم رقم الآية. ثالثاً: تخريج ما أمكن من الشواهد الشعرية من مظانها. رابعاً: التعريف بالأعلام اعتماداً على كتاب التراجم ولا سيما كتاب الأعلام مع ذكر لأهم الأخبار في حياة هؤلاء الأعلام وسنوات وفاتهم.
