لقد كان إبن مالك في النحو والصرف بحراً وحبراً لا يبارى في علم العربية على تقوى وخشية الله، ومن الراسخين في الحديث والقراءات. وقد أفاد طلاب العلم بالخلاصة التى تسمى بالألفية، فأقبلوا عليها حفظاً وشرحاً وإعراباً، ذلك أن الإعراب من الواجبات التي لا بد لكل طالب علم منها، ومن المهمات التي لا يستغني طالب عنها. هذا ولما كان من أنفع المسالك الأدبية إلى هذا النحو الخلاصة: الألفية لسيبويه عصره وعلامة دهره جمال الدين بن مالك، كان لا بد من إعراب مبانيها. من هنا انبرى ابن طولون لإعراب جميع أبياتها ليسهل تناولها على معربيها، موسماً كتابه ب "اللوامع الشمسية في إعراب الخلاصة الألفية". وابن طولون هو أبو عبدالله محمد بن علي الشهير بابن طولون الدمشقي الصالحي الحنفي، له باع في علم الحديث والتأريخ، راسخ في علم الفقه. ولد بالصالحية صالحية دمشق بالسهم الأعلى قرب المدرسة الحاجبية سنة 880 هجري وسمع وقرأ على جماعة، وتلقى الفقه على عمه حبال بن طولون وغيره، وأخذ عن السيوطي إجازة مكاتبة وآخرين من أصل الحجاز، وولي تدريس الحنفية بمدرسة أبي عمر وإمامة السليمية بالصالحية. توفي في دمشق ودفن بتربة أسرته بسفح قاسيون قبالة الكهف والخوارز، وله تصانيف كثيرة في النحو وغيره.
