التضمين هو إيقاع لفظ موقع غيره لتضمنه لمعناه، وهو نوع من المجاز ولا اختصاص للتضمين بالفعل بل يجري في الاسم أيضاً. وحول التضمين بأنواعه المختلفة يدور البحث في هذا الكتاب الذي جاء ثمرة دراسة متأنية لآراء القدماء والمحدثين في هذا الموضوع، ونظرة علمية لتلك الآراء، حيث تكونت لدى الباحث أربعة فصول بين مقدمة وخاتمة.
ذكر في مقدمة الكتاب حوافز البحث وخطته. ليتحدث في الفصل الأول عن التضمين في البلاغة والعروض، مفصلاً القول في التضمين البياني والبديعي والعروضي، واقفاً على مفهوم كل منها مبيناً علاقة التضمين البياني بأركان البلاغة الأخرى كالمجاز والكناية، والحقيقة، موضحاً علاقة التضمين البياني بأركان البلاغة الأخرى كالمجاز والكناية، والحقيقة، موضحاً علاقة التضمين البديعي بالاقتباس مظهراً من ثمَّ آراء النقاد في قيمة هذا النوع من التضمين في علم البديع.
عاقداً الفصل الثاني على التضمين في النحو، مبيناً في البداية مفهوم التضمين في المعاجم اللغوية، ثم المفهوم الاصطلاحي للتضمين، فأثر نظرية الأصل والفرع فيه، وأخيراً أثر التضمين في قضايا النحو العربي ومسائله كالبناء والنيابة النحوية، وتعدي الفعل ولزومه، والمشتقات النحوية.
لينتقل في الفصل الثالث للحديث عن رسالة ابن كمال باشا في التضمين لأن صاحبها يكاد يكون من القلائل من العلماء ممن تحدثوا في هذا الموضوع في مبحث مستقل، ولأنه انفرد برأي خاص في التضمين البياني، وقد درس الباحث هذه الرسالة مبيناً أرضية صاحبها في البلاغة ثم منهجه في الرسالة وأخيراً محتوى الرسالة. منتهياً من ثم إلى نتائج واضحة دوّنها في نهاية الفصل.
أما الفصل الأخير فقد خصصه الباحث لدراسة آراء المحدثين في التضمين مظهراً وجهات نظرهم حول كل من التضمين البياني والبديعي اللذين انصبت آراؤهم عليهما فقط. مسجلاً في الخاتمة أهم النتائج التي تم توصله إليها في هذا البحث.
