روائي فرنسي، درس الحقوق، ولكنه عكف على التأليف الأدبي. أصيب بمرض عصبي جعله يمكث طويلاً في كرواسيه. كان أول مؤلف مشهور له: « التربية العاطفية » (1843 – 1845)، ثم « مدام بوفاري » 1857 التي تمتاز بواقعيتها وروعة أسلوبها، والتي أثارت قضية الأدب المكشوف. ثم تابع تأليف رواياته المشهورة، منها: « سالامبو » 1862، و« تجربة القديس أنطونيوس » 1874، ويعتبر فلوبير مثلاً أعلى للكاتب الموضوعي، الذي يكتب بأسلوب دقيق، ويختار اللفظ المناسب والعبارة الملاءمة.

خلال رحلته إلى الشرق الأدنى، سنة 1849 دون فلوبير انطباعاته في سلسلة من دفاتر ملاحظات الجيب، التي ما تزال موجودة إلى الآن في أوراقه. بعد عودته نسخ ووسع ما دونه فيها تاركاً لمخيلته العنان في خلط المشاهدات بالتحيلات. قبل هذا التاريخ كان فلوبير يردد حالماً: "آه، كم أنا على استعداد للتخلي عن كل نساء العالم مقابل الحصول على مومياء كليوباترا". هذه الجملة مثال على إسراف فلوبير الشاب في عاطفته الغريبة نحو الشرق. كان الطالب فلوبير في روان الشمالية الكئيبة مولعاً بالشمس والآثار القديمة. على أن فتنة الشرق وعوالمه التي روى أخبارها الرحالة الغربيون السابقون سرعان ما ظهرت في يومياته صوراً حقيقية نقلها من الحياة اليومية للقاع المصري، إلى جانب أخرى فانتازية فبركتها مخيلة مريضة جائعة لكل ما هو إيروسي وشاذ، ليبدو الشرق في يومياته قطعة من ليل اللذة الجنسية وصوراً تعكس أعماقاً مكبوتة وقد صعقتها شمس الشرق وزمانه المختلف. كتاب مثير، إنما لا مناص من قراءته بوعي حذر.
