المقصود بالطب العربي في هذا الكتاب، الذي جاء ضمن جزأين، هو الصناعة الطبية التي مارسها العرب قبل الإسلام وبعده وحتى ظهور الاكتشافات والاختراعات الحديثة في هذه الصناعة في مطلع القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي.
والكتاب في أصل هو عدد من المحاضرات ألقاها الدكتور كمال السامرائي على طلاب الصف النهائي في كلية الطب في بغداد. وكان الهدف من تلك المحاضرات أن يعرف الطالب تاريخ الطب قبل أن يصل هذا العلم إلى العرب في القرون الوسطى، ويعد وصوله إليهم ومدى مشاركتهم بهذا الحقل في الحضارة الإنسانية.
ويحتل القرن الرابع عشر الهجري-العاشر الميلادي مركز الدائرة التي برز فيها العرب في العلوم التطبيقية. وقد اعتنى الدكتور كمال بشكل خاص بتاريخ الطب العربي قبل وصوله إلى ذلك المركز بينما اكتفى بتدارسه في هذا الكتاب إلى القرن التاسع الهجري فقط.
