يهتم هذا الكتاب بالبحث عن حلول لمشكلات التعليم وتعلّم الرياضيات في المرحلة الجامعية . هذه المشكلة هي ما دفعت الأستاذة الدكتورة هدى الخرساني لوضع كتاب مساعد في أسس الرياضيات، تتلمس من خلاله ما يظهر من تفاوت الفهم بين الكلاب في سرعة اختيار أسلوب الحل الصحيح للمسائل من بين الحلول المختلفة ودقة هذا الحل، وقصره ومنطقية خطواته، والذي يعود إلى تفاوت المستوى الفكري بين الأستاذ والطالب وتحرّج الطالب من الإستفسار عما يشكل عليه من فهم.
من هنا يأتي هذا الكتاب من تجربة حيّة عمدت من خلالها المؤلفة إلى اختيار ثلاث طالبات متميزات لإعداد بحث التخرج في هذا الموضوع وهو "تبسيط مادة أسس الرياضيات" وقد ركزت في البحث على حلّ تمارين الأبواب الأساسية في نظرية المجموعات (من كتاب نظرية المجموعات للدكتور فالح الدوسري) إذ تعتبر المؤلفة أنه بفهم هذه الأبواب تتذلل صعوبة هذه المادة وتكتسب الطالبة القدرة على الفهم الدقيق للموضوعات المجردة كما تتكون لديها المهارة في اختيار طريقة البرهان المناسبة للمسائل المختلفة.
وفي هذا الكتاب شرح مفصّل للآلية التي اتبعت في الدراسة من الناحية النظرية والتطبيقية بما فيها الإختبارات والتمارين سوف يُستفاد منها طلاب الجامعات من ذوي الإختصاص الآنف الذكر.
يقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة أبواب جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: الباب الأول: مبادىء المنطق الرياضي، الباب الثاني: المجموعات، الباب الثالث: العلاقات، الباب الرابع: الدوال، والباب الخامس: المجموعات المنتهية وغير المنتهية.
