ليس من السهولة بمكان أن يضع المرء قاموساً لغوياً يتناول فيه مفردات اللغة العربية في خضم الاختلافات المتعددة التي تشهدها ساحة المفردات والاصطلاحات العربية التي نشأت نتيجة الاختلافات النطقية والدلالية في داخل المجتمعات العربية المتنوعة، فضلاً عن الألفاظ الدخيلة والمصطلحات العلمية والتقنية التي تشق طريقها إلى معاجم اللغة العربية، مما تسبب ببعض الارتباك في تلفظ هذه الكلمات أو تلك وفي بعض معانيها، حتى بات الخطأ الشائع يطغى على الكلام الصحيح ويكاد يحل محلّه.. عدا الاختلاف بين اللغويين أنفسهم في كتابة هذه الكلمة أو تلك وفي اختلاف معنى هذه عن الأخرى، نذكر، مثلاً كلمة "شؤون" و"مسؤول" تكتبان "شئون" و"مسئول في بعض البلاد العربية، وكلمة "سبورة" تحل محلها كلمة "لوح" وكذلك "الحوارة" تحل محل "الطبشورة" الخ.
بيد أننا إزاء ذلك سعينا إلى وضع هذا المعجم ليكون ملاذاً لطلابنا الأعزاء يرشدهم إلى الكلمة المطلوبة بسهولة ومن دون اضطراب، إذ ما عليهم سوى البحث عن الكلمة كما يلفظونها، واعتماد طريقة الترتيب الألفبائي بدءاً بالألف وانتهاءً بالياء، من دون العودة إلى جذر الكلمة.
أضفنا إلى "المعجم المدرسي" عدداً من الألفاظ التقنية الحديثة كالإنترنت والحاسوب والتلفاز وغيرها، وتوسعنا في شرح بعض الكلمات، وزدنا إلى بعضها عدداً من والأسماء التي عرفت بها وأهملتها الكثير من القواميس العربية الأخرى، كالأسماء التي عرف بها الأسد أو الشمس أو السيف أو الخ... كما أهملنا الكثير من الكلمات التي خف وهج استعمالها بفعل تطور الحياة البشرية، واستندنا إلى ما هو متداول ومتعارف عليه في الوطن العربي.
