"ضربا الرجل على رأسه وقتلاه" بهذه الحادثة تتحول حياة شابين في مقتبل العمر إلى مسار آخر، لم يكن لهما إرداة فيه، ربما هي الأقدار تفعل فعلتها في تلك اللحظة المشؤومة، فبينما كان حليم وصديقه حسن عائدين من الكنيسة حيث كانا يحاولان حل مشكلة حليم مع راعي الأبرشية. وكان حليم في حالة نفسية مسيئة وحسن يحاول إضحاكه باستعادة ذكريات طفولتهما معاً، انفجر الشابان بالضحك وعلت ضحكتهما مدوية حي الزاهرية/ طرابلس، من دون أن يلحظا من يسير بقربهما، لكن ما أن وصلا قرب دكان خليل السنكري أحد أبناء الحي، وإذ بهما يسمعان رجلاً يصرخ: "يا كلاب تهزؤون من ابنة عمي!!". لم يعر الشابان كلام الرجل أي اهتمام وأكملا طريقهما، ولكن فجأة شعر حسن بيد تمسك كتفه وتشده إلى الوراء، فإذا برجل ملتح ذي ذقن طويلة سوداء يلطمه على وجهه ويكيل له كل أنواع السباب والشتائم، فدفعه عنه، فانزلق الرجل على الأرض، ثم وقف، بسرعه وحاول ضربه بمدية، بسرعة التقط حليم يد الرجل محاولاً صده عن صديقه، لم يرتدع الرجل فاضطرا إلى ضربه، "فسقط على الأرض محدثاً دوياً كبيراً!".
بعد تلك الحادثة لم يجد الشابان بداً من الهرب، فساقت الأقدار حليم إلى سورية وبقي حسن في لبنان، تعرض كل منهما إلى تجارب قاسية، لم يتخلصا منها إلَا بالإيمان (طريق النفس المطمئنة) وعندما جمعتهما الأقدار ثانية، عاد الإثنان يدخلان حي الزاهرية صوفياً وراهباً معاً. "في العادة الصدف لا تحصل إلا نادراً، لكنها غير مستحيلة، في أوائل الربيع شاهد حسن مصطفى الإسكافي في حي الزاهرية صوفياً وراهباً يدخلان الحي".
