حي المسلحْ - الكرنتينا، كان قاعدة حزام البؤس في لبنان. ومنه انطلق هذا الحزام ليلف بيروت بنصف مليون من الفقراء، كانوا خلال نصف قرن، حقل تجارب للأفكار وللدراسات حول قابلية الإنسان على العيش في ظل الظروف القاسية، ومدى تحمله لكل ضروب القهر الإجتماعي.
احست هذه الطفيليات من الفقراء والنامية هامشياً عند أطراف البحر، أنها تنتمي إلى وطن لا يريد التعامل معها إلا على أساس منطق السادة والخدم، كما يرفض الإعتراف بحقها في الحياة الخالية من الإذلال. ولا يرى أصحابه والمستفيدون منه حرجاً في وصم أبناء هذا الحي بالأغراب، ليتهربوا من واجباتهم إزاء هؤلاء الناس. واتسعت دائرة الإنكار لتشمل كل من في الحي وما فيه، حتى أحلامهم وأكواخهم وعرقهم ودموعهم... فكانت البداية.
