يضم الكتاب جمل ما رواه المحدثون من المسلمين، من سنن سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وذلك للتأدب بآدابه والتحلي بخصاله هذا وإن التأدب بأدابه والتخلق بأخلافه والاتصاف بظاهر سنته وباطنها هو الكمال الأقصى والغاية القصوى وعنده خير الآخرة والأولى. وقد ترك صاحب الكتاب إيراد المكروهات، لاستقرار المذهب على أنه صلى الله عليه وسلم ما كان يصدر عنه المكروه ولا المباح بما أنه مباح ومكروه. والعقل والنقل بذلك ناهض.
وقد أورد شمائله صلى الله عليه وسلم تيمناً، ولما فيه من الدلالة على أخلاقه، وإن خرجت عن الغرض من وضع الكتاب، ولم يورد المصنف وقائعه الجزئية وإنما ذكر الجوامع والجمل.
